EARDRUMS REVIEW SCORE: 6.8/10
Each of them could’ve been bigger than they are together, and the only thing that holds them back is themselves and the vulgarity of success, the band claims. Together Hiawata! is Tore Lchster Hauge, Johan Rogge Loennecken, Are Volmert Srensen, Einar Stubhaug and Hkon Hagen.
These guys have grown up in the suburbs of Oslo, Norway, and find it suitable to sing about the troubles of being from the upper middleclass, american soap-operas and the romance of being unhappy. Still, what they want the most, is to make honest popmusic which will make the postman whistle, and preferable with vulgar texts they are ashamed to sing.
I guess you can say they’ve managed the part about whistling. After listening through the upcoming album only once, some of the songs has got stuck in my head. I went to the kitchen for a second or two to pour myself a cup of coffee, and caught myself humming “Dylan MacKay”…that’s gotta be a good thing.
In my opinion, there are so many indie pop/rock-bands at the moment, that it has to be really special and distinctive for me to really like it. “They could’ve been bigger than Hiawata!” has a few good songs which I really enjoyed. “Shining Spinning” is one of the songs I definetely will listen to repeatedly. Along with “Tigerqueen”, I really loved the vocal. “Something for the ladies (in us)” and “Boys says/girl says” are also ok, but I gotta say that most of these songs are too much of the same thing. I think you gotta be up for Hiawata!s music to enjoy it fully. It’s not the kind of music you can listen to for hours.
While writing this review, I keep pressing the play-button on “Shining Spinning” and “Tigerqueen”. Definitely my favourites. I would’ve liked to see more of the sound of these songs. Great vocal! Makes me happy, and wanna dance!
All in all, a good album, but nothing more. Some good songs, but the rest is tiresome and boring.
