Maps – Noisy Bedroom Electro Rock

Posted on by Nicolas in Bandprofile | 1 Comment

Right this second, the biggest buzz band in the UK is probably Northampton’s Maps, who are making some of the most exciting noise I’ve heard since The Radio Dept. (and that’s saying alot). James Chapman, the man behind the band, started making music in his bedroom while listening to the great ancestors like My Bloody Valentine; now, a couple of years down the line, he’s releasing his debut album, We Can Create, on Mute; it was recorded in Iceland (always …

Something for those sunny days, – here’s Watoo Watoo!

Pascale and Michaël are Watoo Watoo, a wonderful pop project from Bordeaux, France. They are also husband and wife, and have been making songs together for 10 years now. Michaël makes the music, plays the instruments and creates the cover-artwork, and Pascale adds the sweet vocals when she has the time. According to their label, Letterbox records (same label as Eardrums-favourites California Snow story), Pascale is always busy doing something else, so Michaël needs to ask her some time in …

Hans Appelqvist – accessible and child-friendly experimental music

The ones who visit Eardrums frequently may have noticed that I’m more of a label-fan than a band-fan. Bands usually disappoint me or bore me after their second album, but good labels may release interesting music within the same genre by several good artists. One of these favourite labels of mine is the Swedish Häpna-label, which I wrote a feature about some months ago. One of their artists, Hans Appelqvist, has a new album out now, – his second release …

Emma Pollock

I’m highly addicted to the music of Emma Pollock these days. I’m not sure what it is with her music that touches me so deeply, but it does, and maybe it is ok not to try to define the reasons here? Emma might be better known as the singer of Glasgow’s The Delgados, and her solo-music makes me wonder if there was something I missed when I listened to her old band. The Delgados never made a huge impression on …

It’s a musical!

It’s a musical! is Ella from Sweden and Robot from Germany, and together they have recorded some wonderful songs. Some of you may know Ella from the swedish one-woman-project Bobby Baby, where she makes nice little tunes, records them and releases them on a cd-r or just for free on the internet. The two met on a tour in Germany, where Ella performed as Bobby Baby and Robot (a.k.a. Robert) played drums for the german duo Lady Boy. Late 2006 …

The Norwegian – Kommode & the Whitest Boy Alive

Posted on by Nicolas in Bandprofile, Nordic music | Comments Off

Pitchfork: People have a pretty narrow concept of Norwegian music.Ådne Meisfjord (120 Days): Yeah, black metal and Kings of Convenience.Mostly, people in France don’t care much about black metal, so the coming of Bergen-via-Berlin’s The Whitest Boy Alive was the closest we’d gotten to a special Scandinavian night since 120 Days themselves had come by.I still love Erlend Øye’s band like the first time I heard “Burning” in 2006; seeing them live for free in a small Parisian venue was …

The Icicles – arrivals and departures

Posted on by Knut in Bandprofile, Reviews | Comments Off

There are so many great albums out this spring, and I’m struggeling hard to manage to write about all the cds I really enjoy at the moment. This one is a must for people who like catchy, sugar-sweet and uplifting popmusic. “Arivals and departures” is the second album from The Icicles, and it is filled with good tunes perfect for a warm summer day. It is all very tastefully done, from the nice cover to the arrangements and the melodies.I …
