The Mabuses – “Mabused”

This album was a total surprise for me, and I had no expectations when I pressed play the first time. But WOW what an album!
The Mabuses has been around for quite some time, but I’m not one of those who has stumbled into them, before now. They have released two albums on Rough Trade nearly a decade ago, and this new album, "Mabused", will be released on the band’s own label Magpie Records on September 25.
What does it sound like? Hmmm… It is a very varied album, – you could say that the core is melodic indie with good harmonies and with interesting production details and a clever use of samples. Some of it reminds me of Super Furry Animals, other parts remind me of a modern day indierock version of The Beach Boys. Add some XTC, some folk-influences, quite a huge dose of the Elephant 6-sound, a tiny bit of post-punk and some electronic elements, and you’ll have it.
The record contains all of this and more. The vocals are perfect for the music of The Mabuses, – low-key male vocals with lots of air and feeling. The Mabuses is led by Kim Fahy from Brighton, Sussex. He has a background as the founder of The Assassins, and has worked with people from bands like The House of Love and The Jesus and Mary Chain in the past. The other members in The Mabuses are a real international and experienced crew, – from the England, Ireland, Germany and France. They have also worked with several indie-celebrities and played with indie heroes like Siouxie and the Banshees, Clock DVA, Matt Johnson, Lloyd Cole, Matthew Herbert and several others.
