Thursday Tunes, week 39

September 27th, 2007 by Knut

We’re here again, now with a new name: Thursday Tunes. The number of songs will vary from post to post, – twelve, twenty or two or even something that doesn’t start on a T… Here are this week’s Thursday Tunes, all of them found somewhere on bandsites, labelsites, promosites or magazine-sites on the internet. This week’s Thursday Tunes is a super-edition, with great music from The Lucksmiths, Tullycraft, Iron & Wine, Susanna, British Sea Power, Sea Wolf, Athlete, Magnet, Office, Ok Ikumi, Love like fire, The Most Serene Republic, Ugress, Maritime, Thurston Moore, Sally Shapiro, Fred Astereo and Language of Flowers… Enjoy the music!

The Lucksmiths – I started a joke (from Tullycraft’s mp3 blog)
Wonderful Bee Gees cover, from the Lucksmiths’ new double album “Spring a leak”. Great stuff!

Tullycaft – The Punks are writing love songs (from bandsite). Hey, hey, hey! The kings of twee return with a new album and a new song. Great lyrics and great pop, as usual. Hey, hey! Oooh, aah, aah!

Iron & Wine – Innocent Bones (from subpop.com). New song from Iron & Wine’s new album “The Sheperd’s dog”, – a song that sounds a bit different than what I’ve heard from Sam Beam before.

Susanna – Home recording (from pitchfork). Solo project from Susanna, the singer from the magnificent (and magical) Norwegian duo Susanna and the magical orchestra. Brilliant new album out now on Rune Grammofon. I said BRILLIANT. Which means “go and buy, now!”)

British Sea Power – Atom (from spinner). High energy track from the new album by BSP.

Magnet – Lonely no more (label site) – Our Norwegian hero with a bouncy popsong…

Athlete – Airport Disco (from spinner) – I like this one. Not as lightweight as their previous stuff has been, and I enjoy the electronic elements a lot.

Office – Oh My! (from labelsite) – Their album is very, very good, and so is the song. Check them out!

Ok Ikumi – always stay the same (2 1/2 minute sample of a song from the new album “spirits”, out in November on Blue Bell Records. Think DNTEL, Figurine and other great electro-pop bands. Addictive!).

Love Like Fire – From a tower (from bandsite) – These are new to me, but I really like their sound. Will definitely check out more from them.

The Most Serene Republic – Why So Looking Back (from spin.com) – They’re finally back! I listened a lot to their previous album last year (or was it the year before that), and I guess this one will be played some times too…. Inteesting sound on this song, and I think I will like it more and more.’

Ugress – Rain (from their website. The Norwegian electronica popsters Ugress has uploaded several free EPs to their website in celebration of the news about their new album, which will be out in january. This track is from their september ep, “chromosome corrupt”, available for free on their website).

Maritime – Be Unhappy (from promoagency). The best song on their new album “Heresy and the hotel choir”, according to me.

Thurston Moore – Fri_End (from Stereogum.com) – TM’s new soloalbum is great, and this song is OK too. Rough and melodic, just as I like it. “Fri_End” is not my favorite on the album. Not among my top 5 favorites on the album, but still very good. What does that tell you?

Language of Flowers – Leaving (from Last.fm) – Found this one on last.fm, and I don’t think it’s a new one, but I like it and maybe you like it too?

Fred Astereo – Turn me on (very nice Australian band, from the lost and lonesome recording co. I think they have toured with The Lucksmiths and I have a feeling that there’s some kind of connection between the two bands. Does anybody know something about this?)

Sally Shapiro – He keeps me alive (brand new song from the Swedish indie-Italodisco-queen Sally Shapiro available on the forthcoming US version of her album “Disco Romance”. I like her better in the new, american version than on the original Swedish one. The new songs are really nice, and the coverart is much better… The album will be released on Paperbag recordings in USA in October, and the new version features 3 new tracks. All of them sounds very good. Visit Sally’s myspace for more.)

Sea Wolf – Black Dirt (from artist site). I listened to some mp3s from Sea Wolf a while ago, and got hooked on this music. Finally, the album is ready, and this is a song from it. Love it!

MORE NEXT THURSDAY!
