Monzano – High Horses and One Trick Ponies (album review)

Posted on by Knut in Nordic music, Reviews | 1 Comment

Finally! Monzano from Oslo, Norway is out with their long awaited debut album "High Horses and One Trick Ponies" today (Sept 10). Monzano is not a very typical band in Norway, where most bands are either louder and rougher, more experimental and weird or  more beat based and electronic. Their melodic indiepop is close to several American artists, like The Shins or Death Cab for Cutie, and like the two mentioned artists, Monzano also dares to use the English language …

The Deidres – masters of poor harmonies and communal clapping!

Posted on by Knut in Bandprofile | 1 Comment

7 people from Derby are The Deidres, a supercute, jangly indiepop band that according to themselves are good at poor harmonies and communal clappiing (the title of their demo, I think). They’re jangly, sometimes slightly out of key and they sometimes miss the beat, but they sound like they’re having lots and lots of fun while playing. Their songs are brilliant and The Deidres are the coolest band in the world! Listen and love them! Songs for you to clap …

Hearts Of Palm UK – cute electro-pop…from California…

Posted on by Knut in Bandprofile | Comments Off

Hearts of Palm UK is an American electro-pop duo from California, and we’re told NOT to ask about the "UK" in their name… I’m getting curious, but I won’t ask. Most blogs who have written about them, including this one, makes a point about the UK-thing, so it certainly gets them some attention. The two girls in Hearts of Palm UK have mysterious names like Erica Elektra (vocals, keyboard, guitar) and Ambi-D (glockenspiel, guitar, keyboard, percussion). The two met at …

Kathryn Williams – Leave to Remain

Posted on by Knut in Reviews | Comments Off

UK Singer-songwriter Kathryn Williams is an artist that I have  followed since she released her second album "Little Black numbers" from 2000. Her relaxed and low-voiced style has always fascinated me, and I like her tender and gentle vocals very much. Williams has always been compared to artists like Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, and not without reason. This is music filled with melancholy and thoughtfulness, played on acoustic guitars, horns, piano and cellos, and sung with airy, calm vocals. …

INTERVIEW: JIMMY TAMBORELLO (DNTEL, THE POSTAL SERVICE)

Posted on by Nicolas in Interviews | Comments Off

Part 2 of 2 of the Dublab interview series here at Eardrums: after chatting with beat wizard Nobody, I had the chance to ask Mr. Jimmy Tamborello a couple of questions on the occasion of his participation in the Sous La Plage festival on September 2. I don’t think I can list all the bands and projects he’s been involved with in the past decade, but let’s say that if you’ve ever seen Dntel, The Postal Service, Figurine, James Figurine, …

New video from TO MY BOY : “Fear of Fragility”

Posted on by Knut in Other | Comments Off

UK’s electro-rock duo TO MY BOY has a new video ready for the song "Fear of Fragility" from their debut-album "messages". The album is one of my top favourites this year, – it’s filled with great songs. "Fear of Fragility" is not my favourite song on the album, but here, as a standalone track, I think it’s great.  I love the general punk-ish attitude they show on most of their works. Watch and enjoy! [myspacetv 17312074]

INTERVIEW: ELVIN ESTELA (aka NOBODY)

Posted on by Nicolas in Interviews | 1 Comment

Taking advantage of the glorious Sous La Plage festival in downtown Paris, I spent my Sunday afternoon chilling to the sweet Pacific sounds of Dublab, the South California collective and webradio that regroups some of the most exciting artists America has to offer. Dublab were the special guests at this small free festival, and I had the opportunity to just walk up to two of my favourite artists and ask them questions (the interviews were reconstructed from notes, for lack …

The Radio Dept covers The Go-Betweens in new, free Friendly Noise MP3-release

Posted on by Knut in Songs | 2 Comments

In june this year, Per Johansson and Mathias Nilsson of the Swedish band Kissing Mirrors released a very limited fanzine called "I godan ro". Included with the zine was an 11 track CR-R with mostly unreleased songs from their friends. The fanzine was sold out fast, and now the Swedish label Friendly Noise (home of Differnet, Testbild and other great ones) has released a free MP3 EP with some of the songs from the fanzine. One of these tracks are …
