Alison Eales covers The Magnetic Fields – intensely beautiful!

November 15th, 2007 by Knut

alison eales

This artist and this one song has made my week!
"I don’t want to get over you" was originally written by The Magnetic Fields for the classic "69 Love Songs"-album, where it appears in a more upbeat pop version. Alison Eales has stripped it all down and her version is just her warm, sensitive vocals, an acoustic guitar, glockenspiel and some melodica-parts. Perfect!
In my opinion, she gives the song just what it needs and the beautiful lyrics really shine the way she performs the song here. I’m really stunned by the tender beauty of this one.

So, who is Alison Eales?
She is definitely not a newcomer, but this is (as far as I know) the first time she performs as a soloartist.
She is a part of two of my favourite Scottish bands, Butcher Boy and the wonderful project All My Friends.  I asked her if there will be more solo-songs from her, and she told me that [quote] "I’m recording like a busy little bee just now"[unquote], and some of it will sound like this and some of it is bigger and punchier. New songs will probably show up on her myspace in the new year, and I will definitely keep my eyes and ears on her site to get the updates as they happen!

Interesting stuff is happening in the All My Friends-camp too. After some months of silence, Garry Hoggan has started writing again, and in a myspace-blog he says:

"The new tracks are a thousand times better than what we’ve done before, both in terms of recording and songwriting. Jason’s been playing drums on the new recordings, and it’s been great…what a difference it makes! It definitely sounds a little different from what we did before. I’m glad of that, though."

If it’s better than what they did on their 2007-album "All my friends get hung up" I really can’t imagine how good it may be… The album is one of my absolute favourites of the year, and I hope I will agree with him when I hear the result!

So, let’s hear Alison Eales perform her version of "I don’t want to get over you". Sit back and enjoy!
