Insurgents – great new band to watch from New Zealand

Posted on by Knut in Bandprofile | 2 Comments

The last week, I’ve been enjoying a four track demo by a band from New Zealand called Insurgents. They’re a four piece from Christchurch playing mostly upbeat. catchy poptunes with a lot of energy, gang vocals and a good dose of jangly roughness. I first heard them through myspace, and was surprised that the first song I really liked on their  myspace-player had an even better one following. I love hearing all the members in the band giving everything they …

Cocoanut Groove – “The End of the Summer on Bookbinder Road”

Cocoanut Groove is Olov Antonsson – a young man from Umea in Sweden. His music has a nice 60s feeling to it. The sound is more inspired by Brian Wilson in the sandbox in his Pet Sound-days than The Rolling Stones, if you know what I mean. Olov plays most of the instruments himself on "The End of the Summer on Bookbinder Road": bass, piano, harpsichord, vocals, organ, guitars, percussion, trumpet, harmonica etc. But if you’re listen carefully you will hear Frida …

The Voluntary Butler Scheme with free, super-short EP

The one-man band The Voluntary Butler Scheme has definitely become an artist I have great hopes for in 2008. I don’t expect him to be huge or hyped in the blogs (- well, it could happen…) or any of those things, but I expect a lot of great music from him. He’s productive and he makes wonderful little popsongs. I wrote about him not long ago in Eardrums, and my reason for writing about him again is that he …

Bubblegum Lemonade – Ten Years Younger

As you’ve probably have noticed, I’m more than fond of 60′s inspired melody-lines and sweet, jangly guitar pop. New Matinée-signings Bubblegum Lemonade gives me everything I want on his new EP "Ten Years Younger", and he has even covered an old favourite of mine that I didn’t know was a favourite until I heard their version… More on that later. The Glasgow act’s debut EP features four shimmering popsongs, and I could have gone on and on for hours …

A short Q & A with CRYPTACIZE

(Cryptacize: Chris, Nedelle and Michael. Photo by John Ringhofer) Cryptacize is what happens when two of the people that have given me some of my best musical moments in the last couple of years join forces. Chris Cohen  and Nedelle Torrisi . When they in addition get together with an amazing percussionist, Michael Carreira, incredible things must happen. Their debut album is called "Dig That Treasure" and will be released through Asthmatic Kitty on February 19. The album includes 11 …
