Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies

April 12th, 2008 by Knut

VVLL

Several months ago, probably around november 07, I found a song called “Can you dig it?” from a band with a very special and interesting name, Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies. I listened a lot to the song, and also found other brilliant songs from them via myspace and last.fm, like “Tame me, Tiger”. For some reason, I never told you about it. Kept it to myself, like a treasure. Well, I have kept them to myself too long now, and some of you might have discovered them yourself. For those of you who haven’t, this is really something you should check out.

Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies play music as playful and fun as their name. They sound like they are a whole bunch of people, and the intensity and life in the vocals are so good and strong that I want to shout along with them, and I feel the urge to jump around and dance on the floor. Big sound!

VVLL have their debut EP out now, “EP I” - four wonderful and catchy song with energy enough to keep you going for months. For me, it’s still “Can you dig it?” that’s my favourite, but all the other songs are good too.
I’ve had some e-mail contact with the band, and they told me that there will probably be another ep out during the year. Amanda, who sings and plays guitar, says:

“I am just working on new songs. We will put out another EP (EP II) within a year. We will probably never do a full length record. I’m not patient enough. EPs are my favorite. We recorded EP I ourselves at home and it took a REALLY long time and it was kind of a mess. We didn’t really know what we were doing but we learned a lot about how everything works.”

No album… If that means that we’ll get a lot of eps from this band with a regular frequency, I’m all for it!
Here’s a taster, and you can get the rest of the ep on iTunes.

    vv&tll are actually from my (now hometown) of chapel hill, north carolina…

    Thanks for pointing that out, ned!
    Somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew they were from Chapel Hill, but for some reason I wrote UK when I did the story. They’re not a “typical” American band, are they? IMO there are more of these kind of bands in the UK, and I guess that’s why I wrote UK… Sorry…! I’ll never do it again, I promise! :-)

    wouldn’t necessarily call VV a ‘typical’ american band, but they definitely follow in the grand tradition of all those late 90’s elephant-6 and ladybug transistor/essex green related scenes…

    @ned: Of course. Agree.
