Here you are: “Summer’s here! Eardrums Compilation 2008″ Vol.1 and 2. Yours for free.
UPDATE: If you have problems with opening the zips, it’s just that the servers have gone a bit crazy because of all the downloads, and you haven’t received the whole thing. Try downloading once again, and it will probably work. Update 2: Nicolas has made a torrent file for us. You can use it to download the whole package. Find it on the download pages.
After weeks with planning, artist contact, receiving files, listening, tagging, more planning… we are finally finished with our compilation. It’s huge, and maybe not your typical summer compilation, but it shows what we like and it has a wonderful summer sound to it. I’m also very proud of the cover art, made especially for this project by two of my favourite illustrators, Alex Noriega and Helena Garcia.
Here are the albums (browse down for Volume 2)
Download the zip’s, and while you do, you can read (or download) the pdf-files included with info about the artists and the compilation. Enjoy the music, and please leave a comment or a “review”. I would so much like to know what you think!! Also, if you notice anything wrong either in the text or with the sound, please contact me (contact-link in the left sidebar).

i’m downloading right now, but i’m not sure if i can listen to them today.
anyway, could you do a post on the backstory of the whole thing? how did you approach the artists, musicians, illustrators? were the record companies interested in this or are these bands mostly unsigned?
June 24th, 2008 at 10:55 am
WOW! I’ve only started the downloads, but just the work you have done with the artist descriptions deserves a big fat TWO THUMBS UP! Thanks a lot, Knut, I’ll get back with a review soon!
)
(btw.: summer finally started here in Switzerland, so your timing is perfect!

@DavidK: Hi, I’ve written a little bit about the background in the pdf-file (artist and project info), but to answer your questions here:
- I contacted the artists directly via email and myspace, both the unsigned ones and the signed ones. In a few cases, I have been told to contact the management or the label (or been answered by the management), but in most cases the deal has been made directly with the artist. This was also the way I contacted the illustrators. I’ve been loving their work from before this project, and contacted them directly. In two cases, with Labrador records and with Letterbox records, I have been in contact with the label-people and not the bands. Both have been extremely helpful.
I have presented the idea, the theme for the compilation, and the “free for all, no money involved”, and people have been very positive about it, even the more known names here. I don’t call myself a fan of many artists these days, but now I’m definitely a fan of the artists involved here!
When I started, I thought that I’d probably wouldn’t get a response from that many, so I contacted a few more than I needed. All of them said yes, and I had to make plans for the second volume… Some artists haven’t read my myspace messages before recently, so I’ve had to say no to some of the bands I like a lot, like Suburban kids with biblical names, who contacted me yesterday… sad…!
It’s been fun, and a very positive project. There are so many nice, helpful and friendly musicians and artists out there!

Hi Knut,
Just wanted to say many thanks for including Letterbox Records artists (Sunny Summer Day, The Foster Kids and Tellus About The Moon) on this fantastic comp.
Looking forward to hearing more of Cold Mailman and was thrilled to see Hello Saferide on volume 1. One of my favourite bands at the moment.
Anyway, it sounds like the comp. has been getting a lot of downloads and I’ve seen a lot of coverage on other blogs. Your deserve it!
Best wishes,
Gav

amazing amazing mixes! thank you so much, i really appreciate all the work you put into them. i have a very long flight in two days and i know i’ll be listening to these playlists and thinking about the sunny destinations ahead.
June 29th, 2008 at 11:56 am
BASTARD! That’s all I can say. As if my life wasn’t busy enough already, and now you come along, force these two mind-blowing compilations on me, leaving me with no choice to seek out more more more of about 90% of the artists included across the nearly 50 tracks. The other 10% I already know, which makes it a 100% hit rate in my book. You really insist on keeping me busy, don’t you…
Seriously though, infinite thanks for these. Summer’s here in spirit, if nothing else.
June 30th, 2008 at 4:28 am

Dicky.

hej knut,
first of all, thanks for this lovely compilation with really fine music.
i’ve tried to get the files via torrent, but it didn’t work for days. is everything okay with it?
greetings from the lake constance
olli
July 5th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
@olli: Thanks, Olli! First, - I haven’t got a clue about torrents at all… so I wouldn’t know if anything is wrong. I’ll ask Nicolas (he made the torrent) about it. Probably not enough people sharing the torrent file, I guess.
July 19th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Hey Knut, thanks for the great compilation.
Like Olli, I seem to be stuck with the torrent at 99.7% (Imagine that!!). It’s been like that for a couple of days now. Could you please get someone to seed it for like two minutes?
July 28th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Hi, I just recently stumbled on your site…and I downloaded the 2 compilations…I’m at track 20 of volume 1 and everything sounds amazing. I know its impossible to buy each and every band’s release but it’s worth trying! Thanks for the head’s up to a lot of great new bands. I hope to play some of these great bands and songs in a future MixTape!
Cheers!
Jessel
