EDITED: None left! (Was “A present from us: Invitations to Spotify!”)
SORRY, NO INVITES LEFT!
EDIT: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, READ THE POST AND SEND ME AN EMAIL IF YOU WANT AN INVITE! DO NOT ASK FOR INVITES IN A COMMENT. IT WILL MAKE EVERYTHING SO MUCH EASIER FOR ME. THOSE WHO SEND EMAILS WILL BE PRIORITIZED BEFORE THE PEOPLE WHO JUST COMMENTS. i DON’T HAVE MANY INVITES LEFT, THOUGH…
We have received several invitations to the new music streaming service Spotify, and the only thing you have to do to get one is to send me an email with some kind of self-explaining subject and something nice in the body if you want to.
Spotify is a legal music service, where you can stream music for free from a huge library of artists and albums on your computer.
The free version is ad-supported and you need an invitation to access it. When I tested it earlier today, the only ad I heard was short and music related (the singer of Snow Patrol recommended that you should listen to their album), and I think I heard over an hour of music before I heard the first, short ad.
If you like a track or an album you are streaming on Spotify, you can right-click on it and get links to retailers where you can buy downloads of the song.
What music can be found on Spotify? A lot!
I tried to search for several albums I already have in my own iTunes-library, and only the ones I already thought were too small and unknown were not found. I was surprised to find bands like California Snow Story, Manhattan Love Suicides, Tullycraft, Trembling Blue Stars, Math and Physics Club and Harper Lee, in addition to loads of bands from Swedish indie labels like Labrador and Hybris. More known and established bands like The Cure, The Smiths, The Go-Betweens, Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Morrissey, U2, Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode are present with full discographies or at least several albums, – so are Feist, Sufjan Stevens, Goldfrapp, Portishead and Death Cab for Cutie. Popular new-ish bands like Glasvegas or Fleet Foxes are here too.
The Spotify service is only for streaming, and you can not burn the music to a cd-r without buying the downloads. That’s the thing I think I would miss if this was the only music service I would use, – to carry the music with me on my mp3 player or in the car. I like to own the music. But to be able to have so much music accessible, for free, legally, at all times, – all the back catalogs, lots of new music, – that is so so so good.
You use Spotify’s own music player to listen to the music, and the software looks and feels almost like iTunes (I said ALMOST).
Personally, I rarely bother to stream albums on the web, but when everything feels like you have total control over it on your own computer, without having to listen through your browser, it feels very good. So, I’m convinced. This is still a beta-version in the early stages (0.3) and I guess the service has developed a lot when it reaches the finished 1.0 version.
You can also make your own playlists or make playlist-collaborations with other users.
So, are you interested in an invitation? Send me a message as soon as possible, and I’ll send you an invite!
