Those of you who read Eardrums regularly know my love for the music of the Düsseldorf-based composer and pianist Hauschka (Volker Bertelmann). Beautiful and calming music. Last year’s “Ferndorf” was one of my favourites of the year, and his EP “Snowflakes & Car Wrecks” will most probably be high on my 2009-list. The productive composer will soon release a new 5 track EP on a small Italian label run by one of his friends, Secret Furry Hole Recordings. This is his seventh release since 2004.
The EP is called “Small Pieces”, and the title describes the contents the same way Hauschka himself describes it on his myspace blog: - “small piano pieces with hardly no preparations” and in the press-release: – “these 5 songs are small compositions with composed melodies and they seemed to be pictures or little vague and fast impressions of a long train ride.“
“Small Pieces” is a limited edition 3” cdr and is printed in 300 copies only, where the first 100 will be sold at shows in Japan (19-29th September). The sleeve will be a handcrafted/handstamped paper-sleeve. The EP is available for pre-order from the labelsite on the 14th of September, and will be officially released on the 25th.
I have already had the chance to listen to the EP, and as usual when it comes to Hauschka’s music, I am very excited. Like most of Hauschka’s music, “Small Pieces” makes me smile inside, and my mind instantly starts to “see” pictures and make up small stories to the music. This limited edition-ep should make you get up early on the 14th to be sure that you are one of the 300 lucky people who will get one of these. Highly recommended!
The label have been kind enough to allow us to share one of the songs from the ep with you.
Enjoy Hauschka’s little piano-piece “Sehnsucht”:
Hauschka recently also composed the music for an American short film called “Paige and Jane”, directed by Hayley Stahl. You can watch it below, but I also recommend you to visit Hauschka’s youtube channel, where there are lots of goodies for your eyes and ears.
