Dream Diary – dreamy sunshine-pop

Posted on by Knut in Bandprofile | Comments Off

Dream Diary is a fairly new band from Brooklyn, who started playing together at the end of summer 2009. I’ve heard two of their songs, “Bird in my garden” and “Is he really mine”, both lovely pop songs with a sweet, dreamy sunshine-sound that reminds me of fine bands like The Field Mice,  Brighter or The Fairways. The quartet is currently finishing the recording of their debut EP and are looking for a good label who can release it. I …

At 00:01 on 1st January 2010, they will relese the debut solo single by DAVID TATTERSALL (lead singer of The Wave Pictures) as a free download. The single is called “HAPPY FOR A WHILE”, and this is the title-track from his forthcoming album on wiaiwya, due for release in April. The …

Free digital single from CATS ON FIRE

Posted on by Knut in Nordic music, Songs | Comments Off

Our favourite band from Finland, Cats on Fire, has surprised us with a new two-track single, “The Hague”. The single is a free digital release, and it’s not been featured on any of the band’s previous releases. The second track is a demo-version of “The Borders of this land”, which was one of the tracks on Cats on Fire’s 2009-album “Our Temperance Movement”. According to the band, this new song should be seen as a bookend more than anything else. …

The Grimlets – Grimcore

Posted on by Knut in Bandprofile, Songs | Comments Off

“Grimcore” sounds like some kind of metal side-genre, but fear not, – it’s the title of The Grimlets‘ new album. The Grimlets’ sound is quite dark, slow and rough, with haunting female vocals  creating a unique and beautiful atmosphere. The band remind me especially of Throwing Muses, early 4ad stuff, Pornography-era The Cure or Mid-80s Siouxie and The Banshees, but also of the darker sides of modern bands like Norway’s Je Suis Animal or UK’s  Still Corners. The band like …

New song from The Magnetic Fields – “Everything is One Big Christmas Tree”

Posted on by Knut in Songs | 1 Comment

It’s no secret that I’m the biggest fan of The Magnetic Fields on my tiny island , and I was very happy when I saw that NME posted a song from the Magnetic Fields forthcoming album ‘Realism’, due January 25. It’s a beautiful song, complete with a chorus sung in German! According to the band’s website, this new record “explores the various genres under the umbrella of folk”. Here’s the track (the link takes you to NME): The Magnetic Fields …

A 4th Sunday in Advent mixtape by Adrian Recordings and Strange Maps

Posted on by Knut in Other | Comments Off

A week ago, the Swedish label Adrian Recordings released a wonderful, and very special, single by The Bear Quartet, and as with many new things lately, I wrote about it on my twitter (@eardrums), but didn’t get it out on the blog. There were 4 very interesting tracks on this single, – all versions of the same song “Carry Your Weight” (spotify). The original is a very good Bear Quartet track. The second track is what excited me the most: …
