The Grimlets – Grimcore

The Grimlets

“Grimcore” sounds like some kind of metal side-genre, but fear not, – it’s the title of The Grimlets‘ new album. The Grimlets’ sound is quite dark, slow and rough, with haunting female vocals  creating a unique and beautiful atmosphere. The band remind me especially of Throwing Muses, early 4ad stuff, Pornography-era The Cure or Mid-80s Siouxie and The Banshees, but also of the darker sides of modern bands like Norway’s Je Suis Animal or UK’s  Still Corners.

The band like to call their own music “wintercore”, described by“raw, lo-fi production, haunted and lush vocals, and layered countermelodies in bass, guitar and keys.”

The vocal-work impresses me, and the way they sometimes layer the lead and backing vocals is very nice. The Grimlets are from San Francisco, CA, and are inspired by snowglobes and winter storms… and lots of reverb!

They have recently released “Grimcore”, and it’s available as a free download from the band’s website:

Here’s a song for you if you want a preview before getting the whole thing:
