You can say what you want about Myspace, – it’s an awful site in many ways, but it’s still the place where I discover most new bands. A few days ago, I got a friend-request from a band called Sometimes Always. “Sometimes Always” is a beautiful duet by The Jesus and Mary Chain and Hope Sandoval, – one of my favourite songs -, so the name itself made me interested in this band. When I started listening to the music, I was sent right back to the sunny days of my early youth, when my ears were filled with the songs from My Bloody Valentines’ “Ecstasy & Wine” album, the early fuzzy pop-songs of The Primitives, Sarah-bands like The Field Mice and the good sounds from Creation Records. Ahhh!
Sometimes Always, the band, is in fact only one person, Tyo from Jakarta. His sweet pop songs are drenched in rough fuzzy guitars and analogue noise, and I get the same joyous feeling when I listen to this as I did when I listened to MBV’s early recordings. Tyo is much influenced by bands like Afraid of Stairs, The Tony Head Experience and of course the early days of My Bloody Valentine, and he’s planning to take the project from the studio to the live stage with the help of his friend Ucik.
Here’s “Porcelains”, and I recommend you to go to his myspace pages to listen to more good sounds from Sometimes Always.

Nice song! (Ahh, the Primitives – think their reunion shows will lead to a new album?)
Thank you for dealing with myspace so we don’t have to! (Not that their new player works for me, but we won’t get into that
) I’ve never actually discovered a band there… ’cause the site’s so badly designed I don’t have the patience to browse it. I’d rather come here.
Discovering artists on your compilations has led me to check out more of their music on myspace though (and often buy stuff). I do hate it when great myspace songs never make it to real releases…
