Labrador Records share an mp3 of a new song from Club 8, “Closer Now”, which will be the band’s new single. The single will be released on November 23, and is described as “a melodic fusion of High-life, psychedelia, Stone Roses guitars, West African chants and rhythms … all gloriously mixed with Club 8′s special blend of Swedish pop hooks.”
The song is not one of the 10 on Club 8′s recent album “The People’s Record”, but it has “the new sound” of the band. I must admit that I prefer the “old” Club 8. What do you think of this song?

I’m with you in preferring the old Club 8 (please please please let Johan get this rhythmic chanting thing out of his system and don’t let it affect the new Acid House Kings album!)
I do hear a bit of a stronger melody on this new Club 8 song, than I did on their album though… could be just because it’s an isolated track and the album was a long blur of samey-sound-ness.
Someday I’ll muster up the motivation to give the album another chance, but for now…too much new music to check out!
I originally bought the new album on itunes, and lost it when my computer stopped working (- all other decent shops except iTunes let you download what you have bought more than one time…). I have not missed it one bit. There are so many bands being inspired by African rhythms and chanting these days, and we really don’t need Club 8 to go that way… Let Club 8 be Club 8, and start a Club 9 for that sort of thing!!
Agree that this song sounds better, and it’s probably the “isolated”-thing you mention. I should probably give the album another chance…
Yeah! I’m with you! “Let Club 8 be Club 8, and start a Club 9 for that sort of thing” – should be our protest chant! (And I know a drummer who can provide African rhythms to accompany our chanting.
) I completely agree with you – there *are* enough bands making that kind of music and Club 8 should stay one-of-a-kind…
Sorry to hear about your computer – it’s happened to me too, but do I back things up frequently, just in case? Noooo.
iHate iTunes and only buy stuff there if it’s an exclusive I just can’t get any other way. I prefer real cds, whenever possible. You shouldn’t have to re-purchase Club 8, but if you do, maybe choose the CD? Just a suggestion, so you don’t feel like you’re buying the exact same thing over again, and you can get the artwork this time.
(iTunes still don’t always include full art/booklets, right?)
