New free EP from Heart-Sick Groans’ Johan Brännström

Tweet Johan Brännström, the singer in Sweden’s Heart-Sick Groans has released a new free EP on Bandcamp today. Brännström gives us 4 really good acoustic pop songs, slightly different than what he usually do in his main band. His warm voice combined with the acoustic instruments reminds me a bit of artists like Ron Sexsmith or Martin Stephenson, both personal favourites of mine. “Annabella” and “Just Another June” are the highlights for me on a strong 4 track EP.

I Hate You Just Kidding

Tweet I Hate You Just Kidding, – wonderful bandname, isn’t it? The good thing is that the music is equally excellent. I first heard I Hate You Just Kidding on Indiecater‘s christmas compilation from last year, and the band is now ready with their debut EP. Surprisingly, the title of the EP is not as imaginative as the band-name, – or maybe it is? It’s called “Untitled EP”, and features 5 folky pop songs with warm atmosphere and great storytelling. …

Tracey’s Love

Tweet Tracey’s Love is a new c86 styled indiepop band from South-East London. They have just signed to Pebble records, and are currently in the studio to finish the recording of their first proper EP, due to be released by the end of 2010. Inspired by the bands on Postcard, Sarah and Creation Records, the two founding members Jon and Chris decided to start a band. Listening to records wasn’t enough anymore, and they weren’t satisfied with what they call …

Cool in a Crisis: Sweater Girls + The History of Apple Pie

Posted on by Knut in Recommended Releases, Reviews | 1 Comment

Tweet Cool In A Crisis is a new London-based cassette tape label run by people who previously were involved in great clubnights like Baby Honey and Twee As F**k. The label-name comes from one of the DIY-signs The Pooh Sticks used on stage at their 2010 Indietracks-performance, and if I may add, – it really fits, because this is a really cool project, crisis or not. Every release is a split EP, featuring a band on either side. There will …

Soda Shop

Tweet Soda Shop is the new project from Horse Shoes‘ Drew Diver and Maria Usbeck from Selebrities. They will release their debut 7″ on Shelflife Records in January 2011, and wow, it does sound good!  The two songs “Farewell” and “When You’re Lonely” both have the classic pop-feeling of the 50s mixed with modern indiepop, lots of love and sweetness. Soda Shop’s music is not full of elements and effects. Only what’s needed is used in their arrangements. Their melodies …

Tweet Young Hunting is a band from Los Angeles who recently released their gorgeous 7″ debut single, distributed via K Records. It feautures two lovely, dreamy popsongs with very good vocals. The band is currently working on their first full length release, and we’re looking forward to it. You can download the two songs for a dollar over at bandcamp, or order the physical version from K records.

The Felt Tips – Living and Growing

Posted on by Knut in Recommended Releases, Reviews | Comments Off

Tweet A lot of indiepop’ers have been waiting for a full-length release from The Felt Tips, and so have I. The Glasgow-band have shown signs of their greatness on a couple of singles and EPs before this, and soon we can put a full cd with the band in our players. The cd is called “Living and Growing” and includes 10 far above the average indiepop-songs. When I first got hooked on this band, it was their wonderful melodies and …

Northern Portrait – Life returns to normal

Posted on by Knut in Nordic music, Recommended Releases, Reviews | Comments Off

Tweet Northern Portrait is back with a new single on Matinée Recordings, “Life Returns To Normal” with a cover of Cliff Richard‘s “Some People” on the b-side. The lead track is one of my favourites from their debut album, with those lovely, bubbling guitars underneath Stefan’s rich and powerful vocals. The lyrics are also outstanding, as usual, and the chorus gives me the wonderful warm feeling inside that only GREAT songs can. Their cover of “Some People” is maybe the …

New, free single on EardrumsPop: Paperfangs

Posted on by Knut in Other | Comments Off

Tweet The second single in our netlabel EardrumsPop‘s free digital single-series is made by Paperfangs. This is what they have to say about themselves: “We are Paperfangs, a collective of three daydreamers scattered across Finland. A brother, a sister and a friend. We find our inspiration in old movies, late-night biking trips, second-hand shops, picnics and love.” Their sound can be described as dreamy pop made with analogue electronics, hazy vocals, an occasional jangly guitar and lots of reverb. This …
