Boy Genius – “Staggering”: Wonderful new album, – but do they want us to listen? (Update: Yes, they do!)

Posted on by Knut in Recommended Releases, Songs | 8 Comments

UPDATE: Jason from the band has updated us on the release-options of the album. See below for a comment from both me and him. I’m satisfied now! Brooklyn’s Boy Genius will release their second album “Staggering” January 26th 2010 via Greenpop recordings. This band only gets better and better.  I liked their debut album “Anchorage”. I liked their 2009-single “Blame Love” even more and I love almost everything on “Staggering”. I will get back to the “almost” later in this …

New single from Allo, Darlin’ -The Polaroid Song (Fortuna Pop!)

Posted on by Knut in Recommended Releases, Reviews | Comments Off

(Sorry, I just had to put a polaroid frame on this cover…) Readers of Eardrums probably know the music of Elizabeth Morris, but you might not recognize her name. During her career, she has performed under several names, – many of them including the word “Darling”. I first heard her music on the cute, little 3” WeePop!-ep she released as The Darlings in 2007 (with unique photos on the cover for each of the 120 copies), and I have followed …

EARDRUMS’ ALPHABETICAL LIST OF RECOMMENDED ALBUMS/SINGLES/EPS FROM 2009

Posted on by Knut in Lists, Recommended Releases | 4 Comments

I’ve been asked “what’s your favourite album of 2009″ several times, and I’ve even been asked to make my top albums of the decade list, but I really can’t do it. It’s almost impossible for me to make a list like that, – there is so much good music, and I can’t say that one is better than another. What I like about year-end lists is that that I sometimes discover albums I haven’t heard, and that’s the kind of …

The Sea Kings

Posted on by Knut in Bandprofile | Comments Off

The Sea Kings are a folk-pop trio from south west England, consisting of James Wills, Jake Alexander and Joe Holtaway. The band have been writing and recording songs together for a year, and they are currently recording their first album. I’ve only heard two songs by the band so far, “Sails and boards” and “Villages”, both really good. I am very much looking forward to hearing more from this band. The vocals are especially strong, and  all the three members …

Wild Honey – Epic handshakes and a bear hug – brilliant debut-album!

Posted on by Knut in Bandprofile, Recommended Releases | Comments Off

I am not going to say much, but I just had to make a post about this today. WILD HONEY’s debut album is now available for free download on his Bandcamp-page, where you can also get his wonderful EP from last year, also this for free. I’ve had the chance to listen to this album for almost a week, and it has become a favourite of my whole family. Beautiful harmonies, excellent melodies and although my hopes were high after …

The Woodlands

Posted on by Knut in Bandprofile, Recommended Releases, Reviews | Comments Off

Photo by James Wilson This morning I’ve played two songs over and over again, both from the indie folk-pop band The Woodlands, who sent them over to me late yesterday evening. These two songs have stolen all my attention, – like nothing else matters right now. Rare… Their music fills me with a nice, calm feeling, – it leaves a tiny smile on my face and plants seeds for small thoughts in my head. It sounds optimistic and hopeful, but …

From the notebook and the mailbox, week 42-09

Posted on by Knut in Other | Comments Off

I realize that I post a lot of news and finds on my twitter @eardrums that never gets published on the blog. I’ll try to post some of it here and also some of the stuff I get in my mailbox that I never manage to do something about. I’m hopeless with continuity, but I will at least try to do this weekly. Let’s start with some “VERY SHORTIES” and below this, you will find a lot of free goodies: …

The Lovely Eggs with Twin Peaks-themed Halloween single

Posted on by Knut in Recommended Releases | Comments Off

David and Holly from The Lovely Eggs have recorded a halloween single about (as they say) “the singularly most frightening and shit scarey thing in the world ever- TWIN PEAKS!”. The song is called ‘Haunt Me Out’ and it’s released on Cherryade Records on October 26th. The cd single is only available in 100 copies, and it is handpacked with a special collectible gift: A Laura Palmer half heart necklace… The release will also be available on iTunes, but if …

Lots of good pop-news from Shelflife records + The Primitives are back!

Posted on by Knut in Recommended Releases | 1 Comment

PHOTO: Days Shelflife Records have news for us, and all news from this label is usually good news. On their release plans, we can find new releases from Sweden’s brilliant pop-orchestra Days and also new music from Burning Hearts. Both of these excite me hugely! Some of the songs on Days’ “Downhill” 7”/cd-ep (also on Shelflife) are among my most loved songs ever (esp. “Downhill” and “Simple Thing”), and Burning Hearts’ debutalbum “Aboa Sleeping” is one of my top 5 …
