Alastair Ottesen

Posted on by Knut in folky, indiepop | 2 Comments

Alastair Ottesen is a “Scotland born Texas raised Brooklyn based” musician, who recently released a really beautiful EP called “You can no longer blame it on the machines”. Beautiful, harmony-based pop, with some folky flavours and great melodies. You can have a listen here, and download the first track from the EP, “Life is but a dream” for free. The full EP is available via Bandcamp.

Labrador records has a lot of nice things happening at the moment. First, they are giving away a huge label-compilation for free on their website, “Stockholm belongs to us”, with 22 songs from bands like Acid House Kings, Pelle Carlberg, Sambassadeur, The Radio Dept., Club8, etc..

Thirdly, Pallers has completed their new album for the label, “The sea of memories”,  which will be released in late September. The first single from the album will be released on July 26, and you can download the lead track from Labrador’s website or by clicking the link below:

New video and free mp3 from Brilliant Colors’ new album

Posted on by Knut in indiepop | Comments Off

Brilliant Colors will release their second album “Again and Again” on Slumberland Records next week, on the 19th of July. I loved their debut “Introducing”, and the songs I’ve heard from this new album sound really good. According to Slumberland’s press-page, “The song-writing is still as infectious as ever, but the tunes are now more carefully arranged pushing the band far beyond their punk roots to something as elemental as pop gets“. I can definitely live with that!

You can download/listen to “Value Lines” at soundcloud.

Here is the new video, directed by Jess Scott and Kevin McCarthy.

New single from Allo Darlin’ * Darren

Posted on by Knut in indiepop | Comments Off

Yay! A new single from Allo Darlin‘ , and finally we get “Darren” on a proper release! This new single is officially released in Augist, but it’s available for preorder from the band’s bandcamp now. The single is available as a picture-disc and as a download, and if I’m not very wrong, the band will send out the discs as the orders arrive. If you preorder the digital version, you’ll get one track now, an the other on the release day.

For the band, this is a special release. This is what they say on their Bandcamp-page:

In the spirit of “Henry Rollins Don’t Dance”, the band wanted to release something special on vinyl. This record is not being promoted anywhere and will only be available via our website or at our shows. Side A is a song called “Darren”. It’s about listening to records when you’re embarking on a new romance. Side B is a song called “Wu Tang Clan”. It was written by Darren Hayman and John Morrison when they were known as The French. This song is also about listening to records. This record is officially sanctioned by Darren Hayman. Of course.

New video and album from Snippet

I’ve enjoyed the friendly pop of Snippet for some time now, and when Johnno has some new release-plans, it always makes me happy. His new album is called “Slowly Slowly Catchee Monkey”, and will be released on Folkwit Records on August 22. It’s available for preorder there now, so if you like the little preview we have for you here, you should definitely know what to do.

Snippet has made a video for one of the songs on the album, “Bee Stings”, which probably may be my favorite Snippet-song ever. Great melody on this one. The video is directed by Mark Banks. Enjoy!

New single and album from The Drums

Posted on by Knut in indiepop | Comments Off

According to Stereogum, The Drums will be releasing their new album Portamento on the 12th of September.

The first single from the album is called “Money”, and it will be released a few days earlier, on the 5th. After listening to the lead track from the single a couple of times via Soundcloud, I must admit that I’m not awfully impressed. This is just more of the same. Their recipe for making music may have worked well earlier, it does not work well here. Let’s hope the album will bring us some good songs from the band. Here’s the single for you to listen, and please say what you think about it in the comments. Do you like the song?

Puro Instinct * Stilyagi (ft. Ariel Pink)

Posted on by Knut in indiepop | Comments Off

The psychedelic dream pop-band Puro Instinct caught my interest when they called themselves Pearl Harbour some time ago. With a new name and a somewhat different style, Sisters Piper and Skylar Kaplan‘s music have caught the interest of many more than me. They  are soon ready to release their first album, ‘Headbangers On Ecstasy’, due out on September 12 (Record Makers). The first single from the upcoming album is “Stilyagi”, where they are joined by Ariel Pink. Here’s the video, and if you want the mp3, you can download it from their soundcloud.

Les Demoniaques

Les Demoniaques is a collaboration between Tamaryn + Dee Dee Penny from Dum Dum Girls, and their first single is out now on True Panther Sounds. It’s a cover-version of The Jesus and Mary Chain‘s “Teenage Lust”, and they do it with the right kind of “I don’t give a damn”-feeling that a cover of JAMC should sound like.

The single is available physically from the True Panther shop, as a one-sided postcard flexi and limited to 1000 copies with no repress (+ mp3 codes). It’s also available digitally from iTunes etc..

Big Deal

Posted on by Knut in indiepop | Comments Off

The lovely duo Big Deal is one of the artists that will define this year for me, I think. Their single “Homework” and the amazing b-side cover of Big Star’s “13″ are among my absolute favourites this year. Now they’re signed to MUTE, and they have a new single and an album set for release this autumn.

Their debut album “Lights Out” will be released on 29th August and the new single “Chair” will be out on the 22nd of August. The band will also do a headline tour in the UK around the same time, and participate on several festivals, including Reading, End of the road and Underground.

Here’s a Soundcloud stream of their new single. It sounds like a big deal, indeed!

…and here’s the video for their single “Homework”:

Tender Objects with a tribute to Northern Portrait

Posted on by Knut in indiepop | Comments Off

Tender Objects are an Anglo-Swedish indiepop band, with jangling 12-string electric guitars and male-female vocals, who completed their first recordings in 2011″.

That’s how they present themselves in their short biography. This is the new project from David Young, who also play in The Candy Twins, a band we have featured both here on Eardrums and on EardrumsPop. Tender Objects have made a nice tribute song to one of  my favourite pop-bands, Northern Portrait. Have a listen:
