New EP from Tiny Fireflies

Posted on by Knut in indiepop | Comments Off

Most of our regular readers probably know this band already. Tiny Fireflies started as a result of our netlabel EardrumsPop‘s collaboration compilation Between Two Waves, where they released their first composition, “Don’t Wait Until I Fall Asleep”. Lisle and Kristine have their separate projects, Fireflies and Tiny Microphone, and they play together in Very Truly Yours and as a duo in Tiny Fireflies. After their first free 3-tracked single on EardrumsPop (incl. beautiful songs like “Snow”), they are now ready with a new physical EP, “Change”, on the new label Little Treasure, a sister-label of the Spanish Bubbletone discos.

I know I’m probably not the most objective commentator, but I must say that even if I am a big fan of ALL their other projects, it’s Tiny Fireflies that appeal the most to me. Their style and their songs fit perfectly to Kristine’s delicate vocals, and the songs’ beauty shines through with intense precision the way they are arranged in this project. Perfect.

The new EP starts with the lovely and somewhat melancholic sounding “Your Love”, which reminds me of both The Field Mice/Trembling Blue Stars and, unexpectedly, The Cure. The title-track, “Change”, speeds up the tempo a bit, with pounding toms and synth layers as the backdrop of Kristine’s gorgeous vocal melody. The most immediately catchy pop-songs on the EP are the last two tracks, “So sad to say goodbye” and “We made a pact”, – both lovely, lovely, lovely songs.

Tiny Fireflies can reach far, and win many, many hearts.

The EP will have its official release on August 1st 2011, and can be pre-ordered from the Little Treasure-website (link above). The band will have a few copies of the ep to sell at their Indietracks gig, so for people going to Indietracks it might be a good idea to wait until then to get it.

Here’s “So sad to say goodbye”, and if you don’t already own their EardrumsPop-single, go here and grab a free copy.

Finally, a new EardrumsPopcast!

Posted on by Knut in indiepop | Comments Off

I’ve been planning to make another EardrumsPopcast for months, but I never find the time and energy to do it. Today I put together a mix I am quite proud of, – if you don’t listen very closely to some of the transitions towards the end of the mix.;-)

It starts quite jangly and noisy, moves into a quite soft and cute section, and ends with an old classic. Please tell me what you think!

SULK

When I first heard this debut-single from London’s SULK, I was instantly set back to my younger years, when I listened a lot to bands like The Charlatans, The Stone Roses, Ride, Inspiral Carpets, Blur, Suede, Boo Radleys etc.. Especially the first album from The Charlatans, “Some Friendly”, has this sound, – and this look, – and The Stone Roses as well, – both the sound and the look.
So, they’re not unique, but they are good, and their melodies are lovely, – and listening to SULK makes me happy. That’s good enough for me.
The band’s single “wishes” will be out on the Perfect Sound Forever-label on 15th August.

New single and video from The School

The School has a new digital single out today on Elefant Records, and it’s my favorite song from their album, the sweet and lovely “I love everything”. In addition to the lead track, the single also includes a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart” and the first demo-version of “All I Wanna Do”. You can listen to the single in full at Spotify, and buy it in most digital shops.

Here’s the video for the song, directed by Jonas Whale:

The Rosie Taylor Project

I had a clean-up in my mailbox today, and found an email about The Rosie Taylor Project‘s new single, “Sleep”. It was released last month, so I am late with this, but I totally fell in love with the video and the song. Lovely stuff!
The 3 track single can be bought as a download from their Bandcamp-page.

Echo Lake

London quintet Echo Lake has a wonderful double-A sided single out today on No Pain In Pop, with Another Day on an A and Breathe Deep on the AA. The band has existed a little more than a year, and they have so far released an EP and this new single. Their style can be described as dreamy shoegazy pop full of reverb, with lovely female vocals and layers of noisy guitars. Lovely cover-art as well!

Their single can be ordered as a 7″ or digital download from Boomkat or directly from the label.  You can also listen to the full single on Spotify.

Pocketbooks has released a free download single called ‘Promises, Promises’ , taken from their new album ’Carousel’. It’s a lovely popsong, as always from Pocketbooks, and if you can’t wait for the album after hearing this, you can preorder it from Oddbox records. They are shipping advance copies of the album ‘Carousel’ now, ahead of the official release in September. They’re available at: http://www.oddboxrecords.com/shop/release_details.php?cat_no=BOX008

Trust Fund

Posted on by Knut in indiepop | Comments Off

Bristol’s Trust Fund has recently made an album called “AFterS”, – a lo-fi, charming pop album with brilliant melodies and fun sound. When I listen to these songs, I get some kind of Lo-Fi-Beach Boys feeling, if that sounds possible at all… If the Beach Boys weren’t perfectionists, and if they had to record with cheap equipment in their bedrooms, it MIGHT have sounded like this. But probably not… ;-)
Trust Fund is Ellis Jones, who also is a member of another favourite of mine, The Bumblebees.  The album is available for free download on Bandcamp.
