More covers (Jesus and mary chain + Idaho)

Posted on by Knut in Songs | Comments Off

While I’m in the cover-mood (see the recently published ABBA story), I’ll give you a couple more of those. These are all quite new ones, from b-sides and eps.

Guitar – Just like Honey (Jesus and Mary Chain-cover)
This is from Guitar’s newest album “Dealin with signal and noise”, and it is actually one of the best cover versions I have heard of this great song. Guitar is Michael Lueckner, and the vocals on this song is provided by the Japanese singer Ayako Akashiba (who sings on 4 tracks on the album, + on all previous Guitar albums).

Two of his previous albums, including the homage to the sound of My Bloody Valentine, “Sunkissed” (no covers there, just an experiment with elements of the MBV sound) and the Tokyo-album, where he works with traditional japanese guitars, can be found at insound, and this new one can be found on amazon.com.

Trespassers William – To be the one (Idaho-cover)
This is from Trespassers William‘s new “Noble House”-ep, which is very good. This song has been one of my favourites for a long time in its original version by IDAHO. Beautiful. Since this song means a lot to me, I don’t feel that TW manages to create the magical atmosphere of the original. It is definitely not a bad cover, but for me it is impossible to do it as good as the Idaho-original… It is a beautiful song!
You can buy the “Noble House”-EP directly from the band’s website, or from eMusic or iTunes. The original version can be found on Idaho’s album “Hearts of Palm” and I think it is on another of his albums too. The mentioned album can be bought from insound.

For the Outdoor spring party: White shoes and the Couples company

Just a short note today:
Indonesian band White Shoes and the Couples company has signed to Minty Fresh records. Their music “is influenced by everything from 30s jazz to 70s movie soundtracks and everything inbetween” (quote from the press release).
This is their first Minty Fresh-single. Listen and love it!

Oh, this is so good! The Postmarks debut album is one of the albums that I’m looking most forward to this month. Now their label World’s Fair has made an ecard where you can listen to the whole album. I advice you to do just that.

New album and new EP for free from Brave Captain and Sherwood

PHOTO: SHERWOOD

The power of free downloading music as a marketing method seems to make musicians give quite a lot away for free… (Almost free, – you have to give away your email to their mailinglist for both these releases).
The indie band Sherwood from California is giving away a free 5 track summer EP (with cover) on the internet. The download is available only in may, so if you like this, you should hurry. It’s extremely melodic rock. Check it out here: http://myspace.com/sherwood.
To get the ep, you can click on the green banners on their myspace site. I think they sound quite good. A (quite) good reference to the sound may be Copeland or Death cab for cutie (well, I said QUITE…).

Here’s one song from the EP for you:

PHOTO: BRAVE CAPTAIN (COVER)

The man behind the music in my favourite band in the 90s (sadly missed), the boo radleys, now calls himself Brave Captain, and releases a strange mix between indierock, psychedelia, electronic music and all you can ever put into music. He does what he wants, it seems, and sometimes it is just strange, sometimes it sounds like very good popmusic. His latest album is not for sale, but it IS available for free download from his website, – the full album with cover and everything. It’s called distractions, and some of it is very good. I’m hooked on the Boo’s, so don’t trust my guidance here, – check it out for yourself:
Here’s the download-page http://bravecaptain.com/distractions/
and if you want to have a listen before you download, you can check out his myspacepage; myspace.com/bravecaptain

Amy Millan, our favourite canadian, the female voice of Stars + member of Broken Social Scene, will be out with her solo album “honey from the tombs” on may 30. The songs on this album has been written over several years, – some even before she joined Stars.
We are counting the days and while we are counting, we will be listening to this preview, “skinny boy”. Great song!

One of the albums I have been looking forward to with excitement since the band released their fantastic debutalbum, is Rogue Wave’s upcoming “Descended Like Vultures”, available on SubPop on October 25th. I’m counting the days, and I feel like it’s close to christmas in a way. Rogue Wave gave us a preview with the song 10:1 some weeks ago, and now you can listen to another new track from the album. We have also heard an awesome track called “Eyes”: Beeeeautiful!!!!

A beautiful start of the day: Taylor Deupree + Eisi / World’s end girlfriend

Posted on by Knut in Bandprofile, Songs | Comments Off

I found this piece of stunningly beautiful music on the website of the japanese label Noble records. This is the label’s tenth release, and they mark their aniversary by releasing a reconstruction of another noble release. The sound artist based in New York, Taylor Deupree, reconstructed the seventh release from the noble label back in 2003, the album titled awaawa by the group eisi.
Taylor Deupree says this about the reconstruction:

“My initial concept for “Every Still Day” was to take eisi’s songs, which are acoustic and freeform in nature, and to stretch them in two opposite directions. On one hand, I wanted to add more structure and a sense of “popness” and on the other blending in my own style of digital experimentalism. Given the immense possibility of source material at hand I often chose to keep much of the main instrumentation intact, keeping a direct reference to the original songs, not getting distracted by too many choices and technological possibilities. To this I would add layers and fragments of digitally processed sounds and build new arrangements”

Interesting and beautiful music!

Another interesting release from 2005 from the Noble label is World’s end Girlfriend’s new album “the lie lay land”, which also comes into the same category. Here is a track from this album too, – also from the Noble website: World’s end girlfriend – daydream
