Monday Music (lots of it!)

April 14th, 2008 by Knut

from sxc.hu

It’s been a while since I did the Thursday Tunes-thing, and this was supposed to be a new Thursday Tunes-post, but I never managed to finish it until Thursday was gone. Time flies…
That’s why this is a Monday Music-post instead… Hope you will enjoy these songs!

We start with some Norwegian songs. The first one is from a duo with the strange name Children and Corpse playing in the streets. The name is less macabre than it sounds. For those of you who know a bit norwegian, the story behind it was that the mother of one of the band’s friends was trying to explain in English how Norway’s constitution day is celebrated… The mother was not very experienced in the English language and said “Children and corpse playing in the streets”… Understand? :-)
Anyway… Here’s the music:

Children and Corpse playing in the Streets - France (from NRK Urört)

We continue with a Norwegian energy-bomb from Teeny Grownups, who seems to like Belle and Sebastian:

teeny grownups - belle and sebastian

and here’s another Norwegian, this one’s based in the UK:

Campfire Kansas - Everything after (from NRK Urört)

and here are some other songs I like, all free and legal downloads from other websites…

Nat Johnson - Judy’s first beat (wonderful free song from the soloproject of Monkey swallows the universe’s singer, available on last.fm)

Funny Little Dream - It must be love (sugarsweet pop! From last.fm)

Housewife lovers - Out of School (new Swedish band gets some attention from Pitchfork)

Little My - All but the beep meeps (from their new, nice release at weepop! records)

The Little Ones - Boracay (from their new release “Terry tales and fallen gates”, - from Spinner).

El Perro del Mar - Glory to the world (a song from her new album, from promo agency)

The Breeders - Bang On (new song from 4ad)

Nik Freitas - Sun down (from promo agency)

Colin Meloy (of The Decemberists) - We both go down together (acoustic track from his brilliant new live-album. From labelsite)

Lykke Li- Dance Dance Dance (free track from last.fm)

Someone still loves you Boris Yeltsin - I think I wanna die (I didn’t think I would like their new album, but I did. It’s great! from labelsite)

Fireflies - Rearranged (free track from last.fm)

Borko - Dingdong kingdom (nice one from this Icelandic artist’s new album on Morr Music. I think you may recognize parts pf it…)

Anna Ternheim - To be gone (from promo agency)

Bobby and Blumm - In future present (one of the many fine songs on their debut album. From promo agency)

Champion Kickboxer - Clouds (from bandsite)

Did you like them? Want more? What did you like? Tell me in a comment!

Thursday Tunes, week 41

October 11th, 2007 by Knut

disco - from stck.xchng

We’re back with more Thursday Tunes, - all of them found on bandsites, labelsites, promosites or featured in magazines on the web. Some of them are sent to us by the bands themselves. This week, we present several of our favourites from Norway + a lot more. Hope you will like the Thursday Tunes this week! Here we go!

SONG OF THE WEEK:
Juan Pirata and the Tip Tops - My China Palace (from NRK Urört)
Super-sunshine-pop from Norway! The man behind this project doesn’t spread his name all over the web, but if I’m not totally wrong, he plays bass in Rushmore, and has worked with Magnet, Sissy Wish and Matias Tellez for many years. This song and the other songs I’ve heard so far sounds absolutely fantastic, and they all contain elements of The Beach Boys, sweet 70s classics and harmonic sunshine pop of whatever age. You can listen to more of his songs (and download some) on his nrk urört page or on his myspace page. Like so many great popartists from Norway these days, Juan Pirata and The Tip Tops’ hometown is Bergen.

Here are the other Thursday Tunes this week:

Cut off your hands - You and I (from spinner.com)

The Owls - Peppermint Patty (from labelsite) - their debut-album is still one of my favourites, and I’ve just bought this new one "Daughters and Suns". Sounds different than the first, but very promising so far.

Silver Seas - Imaginary Girl (from spinner.com) - I hadn’t heard anything from this band before some promo-person sent me their album, and wow, this sounds good! It has a lot of great harmonies and is pure pop.

The Little Hands of Asphalt - Eating Fish in Hamburger Heaven (from NRK Urört) Norwegian band Monzano’s singer with a new song from his soloproject.

Lavender Diamond - Like a Prayer (madonna-cover from paperthinwalls.com)

Babyshambles - Delivery (acoustic version from Pitchfork)

Scottish Polis Inspectors - Fallen (from cloudberry records | myspace) - Great track from this UK orchestra. The song is one of the B-sides on their Cloudberry records-single, and it sounds like a mix between The Go-Betweens and Lloyd Cole, - which is great in my ears.

Truls and the Trees - Cardinal Mountain`s Heart (from NRK Urört) - The Norwegian project Truls and the trees will release their album this autumn on metronomicon audio.

The Alexandria Quartet -  Justine (from NRK Urört) - One of our Norwegian favourites!

Mariee Sioux - Wizard Flurry Home (from promosite) - She works in a crowded genre, but Mariee Sioux really stands out. I’ve been listening to her new album for some weeks, and she really gives me this "spine-feeling" that only good-good-good music can do. Her album is called "Faces in the rocks" and you can listen to more from her on her myspace page.

And that was it for this week! More next Thursday! Have a great week!

Thursday Tunes, week 40

October 4th, 2007 by Knut

speaker from sxc.hu

Another week with more music to share with you.
Again, all of the music we share here are found on artists’-, labels’-, promoagency’s- or magazine’s sites on the internet, - or the bands/labels have sent us the songs themselves. Let’s start!

Of Montreal - I want to have fun (from spinner)
- a track from the Nettwerk-compilation "For the Kids 3" out these days. Kids music the rock’n'roll way. I hate compilations of kids music played by indie-stars, - it’s a misunderstood way of making kids-songs interesting, and I’ve never met a kid who like them. I’ve met lots of kids who love real indie-rock songs that doesn’t pretend to be something that they are not. Of Montreal does not pretend, and this sounds very, very ok, though. But is it for the kids? I’m not sure…

The Lucksmiths - There is a light that never goes out (Smiths-cover, from The Yellow Stereo). The song is on their new album "Spring a leak".

Let’s Go Sailing! - Icicles (from cmj.com)
- I just love this song. Listen and love it! The song is from their debut-album "the chaos in order". Read more on their bandsite.

Black Kids - I’m not gonna teach your boyfriend how to dance with you (from pitchfork / myspace)
- If you like the Go!Team, you’ll probably get a kick out of this too. If you like the cheerleading-part of The Go!Team, but are more into indiepop, you’ll probably adore it! Charming!

Anna Järvinen - Götgatan (from labelsite)
- A wonderful, and quite unexpected, new signing from the Swedish Häpna label. Her album "Jag fick feeling" was released yesterday, with among others Dungen as backing musicians.

The Most Serene Republic - Sherry and her butterflies (from labelsite)
- Great new album out now, "Population".

Lamont - The golden daze (from bandsite)
- new single from this swedish band. Available for free on their website.

Nicky Click - don’t gotta pay for love (feat mr Owl) (from promoagency)
- quirky feminist dance-electro-new wave-80s retro-indie-pop. Think gravy Train!!!, le tigre, Peaches. This song is from her new album "I’m on my cell phone".

Leiv Reed - Short of Breath
- a new song by our favorite Norwegian singer-songwriter/indie-folk musician, Leiv Reed. He reminds me of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy on this one, and it has a really nice feeling to it. More music from and info about Leiv Reed can be found on his last.fm profile or on his myspace page.

Robert Wyatt - Just as you are (from Stereogum)
The new Robert Wyatt album is briliant, and one of my contenders as album of the year. A review will follow as soon as I figure out how to write about the album without using the few English superlatives I know a thousand times.

The Pains of being pure at heart - the pains of being pure at heart (from bandsite)
- Fantastic band with a fantastic name!

Tunng - Bricks (from labelsite)
-The folk-electro heroes are here again. This is from their latest album, released some weeks ago.

RF and Lily De La Mora - Your book of everything (from myspace)
- started as a colaboration between The Year Zero vocalist Lily De La Mora and RF, but seems to be a permanent band now (…?). Sounds very relaxing and nice.

Superfamily - Warzawa (from itsatrap.com)
- Norwegian band with a dramatic vocalist and a touch of grand 80s pop. Melody masters.

More Thursday Tunes in a week! What was your favourite song on this Thursday Tunes mix? Please tell me in a comment!

Thursday Tunes, week 39

September 27th, 2007 by Knut

single leaf from stock.xchng. Photo by neonerd911.

We’re here again, now with a new name: Thursday Tunes. The number of songs will vary from post to post, - twelve, twenty or two or even something that doesn’t start on a T… Here are this week’s Thursday Tunes, all of them found somewhere on bandsites, labelsites, promosites or magazine-sites on the internet. This week’s Thursday Tunes is a super-edition, with great music from The Lucksmiths, Tullycraft, Iron & Wine, Susanna, British Sea Power, Sea Wolf, Athlete, Magnet, Office, Ok Ikumi, Love like fire, The Most Serene Republic, Ugress, Maritime, Thurston Moore, Sally Shapiro, Fred Astereo and Language of Flowers… Enjoy the music!

The Lucksmiths - I started a joke (from Tullycraft’s mp3 blog)
Wonderful Bee Gees cover, from the Lucksmiths’ new double album "Spring a leak". Great stuff!

Tullycaft - The Punks are writing love songs (from bandsite). Hey, hey, hey! The kings of twee return with a new album and a new song. Great lyrics and great pop, as usual. Hey, hey! Oooh, aah, aah!

Iron & Wine - Innocent Bones (from subpop.com). New song from Iron & Wine’s new album "The Sheperd’s dog", - a song that sounds a bit different than what I’ve heard from Sam Beam before.

Susanna - Home recording (from pitchfork). Solo project from Susanna, the singer from the magnificent (and magical) Norwegian duo Susanna and the magical orchestra. Brilliant new album out now on Rune Grammofon. I said BRILLIANT. Which means "go and buy, now!")

British Sea Power - Atom (from spinner). High energy track from the new album by BSP.

Magnet - Lonely no more (label site) - Our Norwegian hero with a bouncy popsong…

Athlete - Airport Disco (from spinner) - I like this one. Not as lightweight as their previous stuff has been, and I enjoy the electronic elements a lot.

Office - Oh My! (from labelsite) - Their album is very, very good, and so is the song. Check them out!

Ok Ikumi - always stay the same (2 1/2 minute sample of a song from the new album "spirits", out in November on Blue Bell Records. Think DNTEL, Figurine and other great electro-pop bands. Addictive!).

Love Like Fire - From a tower (from bandsite) - These are new to me, but I really like their sound. Will definitely check out more from them.

The Most Serene Republic - Why So Looking Back (from spin.com) - They’re finally back! I listened a lot to their previous album last year (or was it the year before that), and I guess this one will be played some times too…. Inteesting sound on this song, and I think I will like it more and more.’

Ugress - Rain (from their website. The Norwegian electronica popsters Ugress has uploaded several free EPs to their website in celebration of the news about their new album, which will be out in january. This track is from their september ep, "chromosome corrupt", available for free on their website).

Maritime - Be Unhappy (from promoagency). The best song on their new album "Heresy and the hotel choir", according to me.

Thurston Moore - Fri_End (from Stereogum.com) - TM’s new soloalbum is great, and this song is OK too. Rough and melodic, just as I like it. "Fri_End" is not my favorite on the album. Not among my top 5 favorites on the album, but still very good. What does that tell you?

Language of Flowers - Leaving (from Last.fm) - Found this one on last.fm, and I don’t think it’s a new one, but I like it and maybe you like it too?

Fred Astereo - Turn me on (very nice Australian band, from the lost and lonesome recording co. I think they have toured with The Lucksmiths and I have a feeling that there’s some kind of connection between the two bands. Does anybody know something about this?)

Sally Shapiro - He keeps me alive (brand new song from the Swedish indie-Italodisco-queen Sally Shapiro available on the forthcoming US version of her album "Disco Romance". I like her better in the new, american version than on the original Swedish one. The new songs are really nice, and the coverart is much better… The album will be released on Paperbag recordings in USA in October, and the new version features 3 new tracks. All of them sounds very good. Visit Sally’s myspace for more.)

Sea Wolf - Black Dirt (from artist site). I listened to some mp3s from Sea Wolf a while ago, and got hooked on this music. Finally, the album is ready, and this is a song from it. Love it!

MORE NEXT THURSDAY!
