The Lionheart Brothers

Found another track from the great Lionheart brothers on their management‘s website today. It’s a track from their album “White angel Black apple” from 2003, and it still sounds good today. The band has just updated the look of their website to the better, and hopefully there will be a nice sound section there too. According to their new guestbook, new material from the band can be expected next summer.
Here’s the song:

Midaircondo

Midaircondo are three girls playing experimental electronic music, or as they say themselves: “midaircondo is a constellation who explores beat, sound, voice, improvisation in an audio-visual environment.” Their song “Serenade” is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard since the last time I wrote something like that ;-) , and I think you should hear it too!
Midaircondo – serenade
Midaircondo – careless you

the soft eyes

It seems to be an overweight of swedish bands in my posts these days… Here’s another swedish indiepop trio for you: The Soft Eyes. They have a new album out at the moment, “let’s dance to our own beats” on instant feelings recordings. The Soft Eyes features members of the concretes, my orchard and marit bergman’s band, and their debut is all about lo-fi melancholy pop. The album also includes their lovely single ‘never the last time’ and an acoustic cover of my bloody valentine’s ‘when you sleep’.
Here are some songs from this great band:

The soft eyes – never the last time
The soft eyes – living through memories

Amandine

Amandine is the name of a band of four musicians from Sweden, and together they make beautiful music in the alt.country/folk genre.
In the spring of 2004 the band sent demos out to various record labels and other media-type people. Of those, British label FatCat Records (Sigur Ros, Mum, Animal Collective, Set Fire to Flames etc) was the most interesting choice and a collaboration was established. The album “This is Where Our Hearts Collide”, recorded in April-May 2005, will be released in Europe November 14. And in the United States October 17. Here are two songs from the upcoming album:

Amandine – blood and narrow
Amandine – halo

Juni Jarvi

Juni Järvi is a swedish guy making intelligent and very good popmusic that deserves some attention! JJ is still working on his debut album, which will be ready for release later this winter or in the beginning of 2006. On his website, there are several downloadable goodies, so you should check out his music. He has also recorded some eps and cd-r’s earlier, and these can be bought in the hello! surprise! webshop.
I especially like Juni Jarvi’s way of singing, – it’s sounds somewhere between Stuart Murdoch/Belle and Sebastian, Ian McCulloch/Echo and the Bunnymen and Ian Curtis/Joy Division if you can imagine that. Melodic but dark, and even if the music can be bouncy and uplifting in the arrangements, the vocals add a bit of a sad edge to it. I like that. Musically, I am not sure where to place him. It’s nice and simple Popsongs with a sort of 1960′s flavor to them, – maybe a bit belle and sebastian-ish? Don’t know, – but it’s certainly in the Good Music-category!

Here are some of Juni Järvi’s songs for you:
Juni Järvi – if we just want to
Juni Järvi – the stars above the indian lake

Juni Järvi – in my arms

Rogue Wave – Publish my love

One of the albums I have been looking forward to with excitement since the band released their fantastic debutalbum, is Rogue Wave’s upcoming “Descended Like Vultures”, available on SubPop on October 25th. I’m counting the days, and I feel like it’s close to christmas in a way. Rogue Wave gave us a preview with the song 10:1 some weeks ago, and now you can listen to another new track from the album. We have also heard an awesome track called “Eyes”: Beeeeautiful!!!!

Here it is:

Punk of Country – leaving the trees behind

Aaaaargh! I have just spent an hour writing a very good review of this fantastic album from swedish Punk of Country, and just when I was about to publish it, it just disappeared. “Log in”, it said. Aaaarrrgh! It helps on my angry mood to listen to the album once again, I guess, – because this is music that helps to wash bad days away. When I first opened the envelope from the band, I thought “weird name, cool cover”, but after listening to a couple of songs, I thought “Wow! I like this one!!!!”. Punk of Country’s music is not punk nor country, but it sure has the energy of punk… and maybe also the feelings of country? I’m not fully sure about the last one…. Anyway, – it is highly melodic guitar-pop with youthful energy and a confident attitude that we rarely hear from debutants.

I especially like the way they dare to mix genres and styles. Most of this album is upbeat pop, but there are also some really interesting downtempo songs in here. The melancholic “to never be truly happy” and especially the amazingly beautiful piano-track “you are numb” shows the calmer side of the band. My favourites are the naively nostalgic lookback at an 80s childhood in “my happy days”. Very simple, but so effective. I am also fascinated by the ending track “there’s no pollution in sight”, where the band has made an arrangement where three totally different parts work perfectly together, – from the high energy start, via the chord-based slowrock mid-part to the ambient ending. They are even polite enough to say bye-bye, sleep well

I can’t find any bad songs on this debut, – some are more anonymous than others, but all in all every song is of great quality.

This is a great album. Buy it. Support the band. Make them huge! (they are in my eyes and ears already…)

Here’s a couple of songs from the album and a link to the band’s website.

Punk of Country – my happy days
Punk of Country – stop talk just fall
Punk of Country – yes I go away

North Sea Navigator/ Gravenhurst

North Sea NavigatorFans of Bristol’s Gravenhurst will have a lot to look forward to these days. Nick Talbot and his band will release a new album in October and a single in september, and the sound is said to be different than on his previous releases. His former bandmember Paul Nash, who recently quit Gravenhurst, is spending much of his time with his new band North Sea Navigator. NSN will release their debutalbum “make the blacklist” in November, and I am sure that this music will be well received by people who like his old band. Beautiful, calm and ‘autumny’ music. North Sea Navigator is a trio with a quite unusual instrumentation: Paul (guitars/vox), Chip (cello/vox), Tim (harmonium/drums/vox). (The picture shows Paul, I think)
North sea navigator has a website here. They have four songs available on their myspace site.
Gravenhurt has a website here and a personal blog for Nick Talbot here.

North Sea Navigator – make the blacklist

North Sea Navigator – sway to the drone

Gravenhurst – The diver

A lovesong? Mugison.

Beneath her parachute / Monzano

Posted on by Knut in Bandprofile, Nordic music | Comments Off

Beneath her parachuteHere’s a goodie for you! Beneath her parachute is the name for Eivind Bøe‘s sideproject where he does everything that doesn’t fit in his other band, Monzano. In my ears, the two projects sound quite the same, and both make very- very- very good music. People who like the great songwriting of Ben Gibbard/ Death cab for cutie or the popsongs from Pavement will surely love this. Beneath her parachute was chosen as this weeks artist at norwegian broadcasting company NRK’s urört-pages.

Beneath her Parachute will record some songs in studio ‘when he’s got the time’, and Monzano will probably be around playing on some Oslo-scene during the next months. In november you can see them live in Trondheim and probably also in the surrounding cities.

Here are some songs from the two projects:
Beneath her parachute – Pine trees
Beneath her parachute – sharing a window

Monzano – phonograph

Monzano – the sound of frozen milk

(more from monzano on their website and especially on their urört-pages)
